Mother Mary the blessed mother has always been a part of the Catholic Church. Since the Bible does not have any information about the bodily taking (Assumption) of Virgin Mary there was no solid decision in the Catholic church, but during the 7th century the Catholic church accepted the bodily taking (Assumption) of Virgin Mary as on the 15th of August but Theological debate continued.
In 1950 sighting the disputes within the Catholic Church about the Assumption of Virgin Mary, Pope Pius XII making a historical move spoke from the chair of Peter (ex cathedra) and defined the Assumption of Mary as dogma on 1st November 1950 saying :
| "By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory" - Pope Pius XII |
Pope Pius XII did not stop there; he created the "Queenship of Mary" in the liturgical calendar on the 11th of October 1954, which now falls on the 22nd of August. In light of this new dogma and events that follow their after, Archbishop of Colombo Late Cardinal Cooray named the newly built church at Rawatawatte "Queen of Angels" on the 30th of December 1962.
The Rawatawatte Queen of Angels' Church is a unique church which not only symbolizes the Assumption of Mother Mary but also symbolizes the one of the only dogma's set forth by the Catholic Church in modern times. The church also celebrates its annual feast on the 22nd of August in accordance with the "Queenship of Mary".
The Apparition of Mother Mary in this very church may be a sign from our Mother in Heaven as she joys our faith in ever devotion to her. We as a parish, town and country should be proud to be apart of such a glorious church that symbolizes our loving Mother in Heaven.
